Oh yeah, I did a SongFight! last week.

This marks the first time that I’ve ever received 0 votes!

The title was Cur, and there was an optional challenge to do a noise piece. There have been a few dorks turning in bad noise songs, and the purpose of this challenge was to demonstrate that they weren’t doing anything original.

Anyway, most of the songs were very weird.

Oh yeah, here’s the SongFight! song that Bill and I did when he visited a few weeks ago.

We didn’t win.

Hey, I made my triumphant (ha!) return to songfight this week, with Firebomb.

Check out the Starfinger entry on the green fight here: songfight.org/green.

I’ll put the mp3 up on this site later next week.

I decided to take a break from singing this week, and recorded the music for another Brainpipe SongFight! entry. This one is called I Don’t Believe You. Bill wrote the lyrics and did the vocals. It could probably use some mix adjustments as of now, but I think it’s pretty cool.

In other news, Reaktor is officially the bee’s knees. I have entered a new world of sonic possibilities.

This week’s SongFight! is called Please Don’t Call Me Ken.

I’m really happy with my Starfinger entry. It’s more rap, but I fleshed out the music more than last time I did this.

Time was really my main enemy this week. The mix is a little off, and I had some mic problems (not to mention some problems with my flow). Anyway, I think the concept is good enough to gloss over these problems.

I’d like to say a few more words about my current songfight entry Violet Wants It Her Way.

The reviews are definitely mixed on this one, but I consider it an unequivocal success. As my good buddy Matty Destroyer said, “Not every song is designed to be a hit” (or something like that). Check out his site hotboombox.com for some switched on punk rock, by the way.

Anyway, I’m glad to see that some people appreciate the new song for what it is. I’m annoyed that so many people review it in terms of More Than Soup, but that’s not really surprising. I’ve been wanting to do something slow and somber for weeks. This is suitably close to that goal for now.

Yes, I really like this new song of mine. Thanks.

My new songfight song, More Than Soup is being received very warmly. According to songfight lore, all of the positive attention has jinxed me to lose. Anyway, I think it’s a good song. I’ll put it up here soon, but for now check out The Green Fight and vote for your favorite.

Let me know what you think of mine!

 Audio: Hold My Calls
project: Starfinger
mp3: starfinger/starfinger-hold_my_calls.mp3 (m3u)

I did my weekly SongFight! ritual on Saturday morning, creating a track for the Green fight starting tomorrow. It’s called Hold My Calls. I focused a bit more on the music this time, and I think it came out pretty good.

Going into this fight I told myself, “I’m going to make a song that’s three minutes long, or I’m a failure”. I worked for several hours and came up with something that I thought was pretty good, but according to the program I was working in, it was only 90 seconds long!

I fought with it for a while more, and I couldn’t come up with a coherent way to make it longer. I spent a lot of time on a new part, and when I added it to the song it was only 8 seconds longer. I had hit a brick wall. I was a failure. I give up.

I dumped the song into Sound Forge for a little mastering, and it said the song was 3:06 long. I had been looking at the number of measures in the other program. It was 90 measures… not 90 seconds!

Obviously I am a dope on several levels here. I must have listened to the song 15 times straight through as I tweaked it and added flourishes to keep it interesting. I thought to myself a few times “this is the longest 90 seconds I’ve ever experienced,” but I was a slave to the numbers on the screen. I just assumed it was boring.

Anyway, I reached my 3 minute goal. I have no concept of time. At least the song came out pretty good.

I have an entry on the current Blue Songfight. It’s a bit of a return to the Starfinger form. Unfortunately I think its way too short.

One of these days I’m going to blow everyone away!
